More than a few students, over the course of their study with me, have confessed at one point in time or another that they would have forgotten what they have learnt just as soon as their exams are done, as if it absolves them of the expectation to do well, and allows them to preemptively soften my eventual disappointment when they don’t.
What these students have failed to observe is that it is usually not the mathematical knowledge that they gain but rather the quality of a mathematical mind that would prove to be useful later on in their lives, long after the point where quizzes and predictive grades, tests and exams, or the choice of universities and specialties are chiefly their concerns.
Upon one of the aforementioned situations, I usually reciprocate in my confession that I too forget most of what I learnt in schools and in university. And while it may shock them that I too fall short of what they perceive to be “the standard”, and inadvertently have given them the impression that I am not as good a mathematics tutor, I think it is important for them to know that it is only human and the fact that they do not consider themselves capable of living up to that idealised “standard” is not an excuse for them to take the subject less seriously than otherwise.
While the specific mathematical knowledge that they learn in school may have their day in the sun in certain real life situations that they may happen to come across in their lives, (in which case, it is almost certain that most people in that situation would only vaguely recall some of what they learnt, and it is the amount of time and effort that it takes them to pick up the topic again that matters.), it is far more likely to be the case that the mathematical mind that they possess, through prior mathematical training, that will come into use, perhaps even without them being aware.

- Apply a homemade carpet freshner to add a clean scent to make your room feel extra clean and fresh. Start with a smallbox of your favorite baking soda and add either a few drops of your favorite potpourri oil or crushed dried herbs (rosemary, chamomile and lavendar are excellent choices). Sprinkle across your carpet and leave on for 20 minutes, then vacuum.
- Maintain your vacuum regularly. Empty bags frequently and keep your vacuum cleaner tidy. Have your vacuum checked every year or so to ensure it is working to its peak performance. If you want to keep your carpet like new, you must also keep your vacuum cleaner like new.
